John J. Audubon

4 Wimpole Street, Cavendish Square.

Audubon was residing in London in 1837 when he had this address. This was his final trip to England to supervise completion of the production of his book, The Birds of America. Audubon had this to say about his London residence when he wrote to Reverend John Bachman in August 1837 upon returning to England: ...after awhile all was gayety and happiness at our house on Wimpole Street.

The lot also includes: Audubon, John James. Delineations of American Scenery and Character. New York (NY): 1926. 8vo, blue cloth boards with gilt spine, 349pp. A limited edition, numbered 22 out of 42 large paper copies printed. Featuring a mezzotint portrait originally painted by Francis Cruikshank, engraved by Charles Turner A.R.A., and published by Robert Havell, Jr., London, 1835.

The publisher of this portrait, Havell, along with his employees in London engraved, printed, and hand colored most of the plates in Audubon's The Birds of America. It is believed that this portrait of Audubon was produced to publicize the book. Audubon had this to say about the portrait to Reverend John Bachman in a letter dated August 25, 1834: Tell my Sweet heart, that Cruikshank has Improved my Miniature very Considerably - he has worked over the Hair &' - this picture goes to Turner to be engraved in Mezzotinto and you all shall hear report, hereafter.-

Condition: Light, even toning to note; bold, clear signature; light even toning to book.
