Confederate general (1800–1865) who was noted for commanding prisoner-of-war camps throughout the South during the war. Handwritten passport, no date, but war-issued, signed “JHW,” on a 3 x 4.75 off-white slip. Pencil notes at top read, “Leon A. Dix, Jos W. Statins, Peter M. Bonawell. Sloop Cristal [sic] Palace from Accomac Va.” Signed at the bottom in ink, “Passport to …Harbor Matthews County JHW.” In very good condition, with some minor paper loss to left edge, uniform toning, and a bit of light ink pooling to Winder’s writing. Dix and Statins had petitioned for their boats to be allowed to trade to ports where supplies for the Confederacy might be available.
