<B>John Henry Cardinal Newman Autograph Note Signed</B></I> "<I>John H. Newman</B></I>". One page, 3.75" x 6", n.d. Newman (1801- 1890) was an English convert to Roman Catholicism, later made a cardinal. In early life he was a major figure in the Oxford Movement to bring the Church of England back to its Catholic roots. Eventually his studies in history persuaded him to become a Roman Catholic. Both before and after his conversion he wrote a number of influential books, including <I>Via Media,</B></I> <I>Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine,</B></I> <I>Apologia Pro Vita Sua,</B></I> and the<I>Grammar of Assent.</B></I> In 1991, Newman was proclaimed venerable after a thorough examination of his life and work by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. The cause for his beatification and canonization is ongoing.
