Partly-printed DS, one page, 11.5 x 17.25, September 18, 1788. Appointment of Aaron Wood as “one of the Justices to keep the Peace in our County of Essex for the term of Seven years if during that time he shall behave well in the same Office,” signed in the left border under the paper seal, “John Hancock,” and countersigned at the bottom by John Avery. On the reverse is a manuscript endorsement, in an unknown hand, signed at the conclusion “S. Adams,” and “William Phillips,” as Members of the Council. In full, “Commonwealth of Massachusetts – Council Chamber Boston March 2d 1789 Then the within named Aaron Wood Esqr took & Subscribed the Oath & Declaration prescribed by the Constitution to qualify himself to execute the Trust reposed in him by the within Commission.” Professionally silked on the reverse to repair separations along horizontal folds, and scattered light toning and foxing, otherwise fine condition. The white paper seal is slightly worn and toned, but intact, and the signatures are both exceptionally strong.
