(John Hancock) Official copy of a letter from John Hanson (1721-83), as President of the Continental Congress, 1 1/2pp, Mar 1, 1782, folio, Philadelphia, to John Hancock, Governor of Massachusetts, excellent content re a suspected British spy. In small part, "...The suspicians & Jealousies excited by Mr John Temples's return to America in 1778, and the Reports...of his Mission are notorious...These suspicians...were increased by Mr Temple's return to England...& conference with the British Ministry - His coming again to America, without explaining his views...at the very time that the Enemy entertained the fond hope of having subdued the Southern States...suspician of his having been employed as an Emissary from the British Crown...I am directed...to inform your Excellency...Mr Temple was the Bearer of some letters from...John Adams at Amsterdam...the subject of the letters with which he was entrusted...sufficiently evince that he has not the full confidence of that Minister...Mr Temple did, in no wise, account for his past conduct...the United States ought to be on their guard..." Signed at conclusion by the Secretary of Massachusetts, "True Copy, Attest, John Avery, Secy." Comes with a 3rd person ALS, signed in the text, from Temple to Governor John Hancock, 1p, Mar 21, 1782. "Mr Temple presents his respectful compliments to the Governor and is very much obliged...for the communication of a Letter from the President of Congress. Mr Temple stands ready to obey the commands of the Governor & Council upon every Occasion, and wishes that every possible investigation may be made, of 'his past conduct, and future 'Views & designs,' conformably to the request of Congress." Docketed by Hancock on verso of address leaf, "Mr Temple acknowledgmt of Rect of Copy of the Letter I Recd from the President of Congress, respecting his conduct." WITH an official copy of a letter from Temple to Tristram Dalton (1738-1817), Oct 20, 1783. In small part, "...why is justice...withheld from me, a Native, a Subject, and a Citizen of this now free and Independent State. It is now more than two years, Sir, since I returned home...my character, far dearer to me than life...and upon a Matter, Nothing short of High Treason, which ought to have been seriously considered and without delay, decided upon by the Government..." Again the letter is docketd by Hancock, "Copy of a Letter, Mr John Temple Sent to Mr Dalton, Speaker of the House of Representatives. 1783."
