John Hancock document signed boldly as Governor of Massachusetts. Partially-printed document is dated 1 July, 1781. Document appoints one John Ford tothe position of First Lieutenant in the Third Regiment of Militia in the County of Plymouth. Single-page document is countersigned by John Avery as secretary of the commonwealth. Matted with an engraved portrait of Hancock and framed to an overall size of 23.5'' x 18''. Signed appointment has not been removed from the display for measuring but appears to measure approximately 13'' x 12''. Subtle dampstaining along the top edge and some separation along folds, else near fine.
