John Hancock document signed as Governor of Massachusetts, dated 29 May 1790. This is an excellent example of Hancock's signature, signed to the left of the document with his unmistakable paraph. Hancock here commissions Benjamin Young to the 1st regiment of the Massachusetts militia, and instructs him ''carefully, and diligently to discharge the Duty of a Captain in leading, ordering, and exercising said Company in Arms, both inferior Officers and Soldiers; and to keep them in good Order and Discipline: And they are hereby commanded to obey you, as their Captain and you are yourself to observe and follow such Orders and Instructions, as you shall from Time to Time receive from me, or your superior Officers.'' Countersigned by Secretary John Avery, Jr. Document measures 16'' x 12.5''. Some dampstaining, showthrough from docketing to verso, and tissue repair to verso. Overall very good condition with paper seal still intact.
