John Hancock DS
Document signed by John Hancock as Governor of Massachusetts, appointing Daniel Vose as a Justice of the Peace. Dated 18 September 1788, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, document is signed in large, bold handwriting “John Hancock” and partially reads, “…Daniel Vose of Milton Esq., to be one of the Justices to keep the Peace in our County of Suffolk for the term of seven years if during that time he shall behave well in the same office…'' Vose was a powerful and influential figure during the fight for independence; it was in his home that the final draft of the ''Suffolk Resolves'' was written, which explained why Massachusetts colonies shut down their courts in response to the Intolerable Acts. This home, now referred to as the Suffolk Resolves House, has been preserved and now serves as the headquarters for the Milton Historical Society. 10.75'' x 16.5'' document has two small tears at center fold and two small perforations at bottom left-hand corner, neither affecting any text. Very good to near fine condition.
