Partly printed document signed ''John Hancock'' and ''James Dickey'' as Master of the Sloop ''Sally'' datelined Boston, 7 November 1766. Completed in manuscript by John Hancock. In part, ''Shipped by the Grace of God, in good Order and well Condition’d, by John Hancock on Acct of Contract with Mathew Woodford in and upon the good Sloop called the Sally…by God’s Grace bound for Chignecto to say, Thirty Firkins of Butter pr Inv. being mark’d and number’d as in the Margin, and are to be deliver’d in the like good Order, and well Condition’d, at the aforesaid Port of Chignecto (the Danger of the Seas only excepted) unto Joshua Winslow Esq Commissary there or to his Assigns, Freight for the said Goods To be pd in Boston One pound ten shillings Lawfull Money…And to God send the good Sloop to her desir’d Port in Safety. Amen…'' British garrisons at Chignecto and Annapolis in Nova Scotia were being supplied with food and vessels by the Boston merchant Thomas Hancock, John's uncle. Upon his graduation from Harvard in 1754, John Hancock entered his uncle's business as a clerk and, beginning on 1 January 1763, Thomas Hancock sent business letters to his customers notifying them that he had ''taken my Nephew Mr. John Hancock, into Partnership with me, having had long Experience of his Uprightness, & great Abilities for Business…'' He added that future correspondence should be to ''Thomas Hancock & Company.'' Thomas Hancock, perhaps the wealthiest merchant in New England, died on 1 August 1764. Having no children, his entire estate went to his nephew, John Hancock. Single page measures 9” x 4.5”.
