John Hancock military appointment signed as Governor of Massachusetts, dated 2 July 1792. John Hancock was the first and third Governor of Massachusetts and this document was signed near the end of his last term. Here, Hancock appoints Adolphus Spring ''...Ensign of a Company in the fifth Regiment first Brigade of Seventh Division of this Commonwealth, comprehending the County of Worcester...'' Hancock signs the document beneath the original paper seal, which is still intact. Countersigned at the bottom by John Avery, Jr. as Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth. Docketing on verso states that Spring, ''...subscribed the oath & declaration necessary to qualify him for the within office...'' and is signed by Silvanus Town. Document, measuring 16'' x 12.5'', has several folds and worn edges throughout, with splitting at vertical and horizontal folds affecting Hancock's bold signature, though repaired on verso. Good condition overall.
