American patriot and first signer of the Declaration of Independence, John Hancock document signed as Governor of Massachusetts. In this partly-printed document signed ''John Hancock'' with his recognizable paraph, Hancock appoints a Thomas Dawes, Jr. as a Justice of the Peace in Suffolk County. Document is datelined Boston, 8 May 1788. Embossed paper seal present at upper left, below which Hancock signs. Single page measures 10.75'' x 17''. In very good condition with minor separation at folds, minor foxing and browning. From the estate of Sargent D. Nichols of Peabody, Massachusetts, a descendent of Dawes.
