John Hancock Autograph Letter Signed "JH" as Governor of Massachusetts. One page, 7.25" x 8.75" , [Boston], October 18, 1783 concerning monies owed to the State of Massachusetts from the Continental Congress. He writes, in full: "I am posses'd of a Note of hand given to me by the Continental Treasurer in 1776, upon which there is due about Fifteen Thousand Dollars & is the property of this Common Wealth. I repeatedly mention'd this Circumstance to former Assemblies, they Chose a Committee but never perfected the Business. It would be too tedious to relate minutely the matter by Message, but Submit to you the Appointments of a Committee upon the Subject, that by a Settlement the Common Wealth may be Avail'd of their property, & myself Discharged of the Note JH." Docketed in his hand on verso: "Message to Genl. Court Octor. 18: 1783." Whether Massachusetts recovered the funds is not known, but from where a nearly bankrupt Congress would have come up with the funds at this point in time is anyone's guess! Some discoloration along left margin, minor separation at fold. Collector's notes in pencil at bottom, otherwise near fine.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
