Texas politician (1818-1905) who served as Postmaster General of the Confederacy. TLS, two pages, 8 x 11, Railroad Commission of Texas letterhead, January 11, 1899. Letter to J. M. Callahan, in part: "I am in receipt of your letter of the 6th. inst., in which you advise me that you are preparing a volume on the foreign relations of the Confederate States of America. You mention that you have access to the official archives, March 1861 to December, 1864, and that you desire to obtain further information. You express a wish for information from me on certain points; that you find an envoy from France was expected, but that you find no correspondence on the subject.

If you were well informed as to the position of Louis Napoleon towards the Confederacy, during the latter part of the war, I think you would know that the Confederate government was not then expecting an envoy from France. I am not surprised that you find no correspondence on this subject. Besides what I have just said as to the relations between France and the Confederacy, my understanding at the time was that the archives of the State department of the Confederacy were burned when the Confederate authorities were leaving Richmond in 1865." In fine condition.
