Military officer (1841–1864) who, at 23, was the youngest general in the Confederacy at the time of his appointment in 1863. Kelly died a year later from wounds sustained during a raid on Sherman’s communication lines near Franklin, Tennessee. Civil War–dated partly-printed DS, signed “J. H. Kelly, Brig Genl,” one page, 9.5 x 12.25, May 1864. Document headed “Statement of Forage issued to and consumed by the Public Animals under my direction,” accounting for several thousand pounds of corn, oats, and fodder given to 34 mules over the course of the month. In very good condition, with heavy overall wear, tears and paper loss to edges, scattered toning and soiling, and a few holes to the body.
