Career British Army soldier (1788–1845) who made major contributions to military history as editor and publisher of the Dispatches of the Duke of Wellington. LS signed “J. Gurwood, Lt. Col.,” one page, 7.25 x 9, September 10, 1834. Letter to "Captain Creagh," in part: "I am directed by Major General Sir Thomas McMahon to desire your will send a steady Sergeant from the Depot under your command after nine o'clock every morning to be in daily attendance at Alverstoke Rectory…The Sergeant will be stationed on the staircase or in the room in which the remains of the late D'a Francisca of Spain are laying in State, for the purpose of preserving order, and in handing disorderly persons over to the Constable." In fine condition. The letter related to the death of Infanta Maria Francisca of Portugal, who passed while living in exile in Alverstoke, Gosport, England. A crowd of several thousand were known to have visited the village to pay their respects as her body lay at the rectory of St. Mary's Church in Gosport, where her funeral was held and a marble stone honours her memory.
