American Quaker poet and abolitionist (1807–1892) best known for such works as ‘Barbara Frietchie’ and ‘Maud Muller,’ which includes the immortal line, ‘For of all sad words of tongue or pen, The saddest are these: It might have been!’ ALS signed “John G. Whittier,” one page, 4.75 x 7.5, no date. Letter to a friend. In part: “I am at Gov. Claflin’s for a few days, and shall be pleased to see thee & Miss Willis if you can call on me.” In very good condition, with partial tape-repaired separation to one horizontal mailing fold, light scattered soiling, and two small toned tape remnants to left border. Accompanied by an engraved portrait of Whittier.
