<B>John Greenleaf Whittier Autograph Note Signed,</B></I> “<I>Jno. G. Whittier</B></I>”, one page, 4.75” x 8”, Oak Knoll, Danvers, Massachusetts, November 26, 1879. Twelve lines of signed verse are accompanied by the following note: “<I>The other day I came across a copy of a poem that was not intended for publication & so far as I know has never been in print. It was written for a Miss Mary Bowen of Ravenna Ohio. I thought if Charley had never seen it he might be pleased to have a copy of this stray verse of the good Quaker pref.</B></I>” The first four lines of the poem are: “<I>In old Ravenna by the sea / Amid the tall outlying pines / The pilgrim, seeking Dante's tomb / Pauses and kneels by Mary's shrine…</B></I>”. Browning along top margin, fine condition overall.
