Organized crime boss (born 1940) who became a major media celebrity. After an extensive operation that cost $75 million, Gotti, who had repeatedly eluded the law, was finally convicted of murder and racketeering in 1992. As a repeat offender, he was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole and sent to federal prison in Marion, Illinois, where he died in 2002. ALS signed “Johnny,” one faintly-lined page, 8.5 x 11, no date, but postmarked July 29, 1998. Letter to his friends Tom and Barbara Sugg, written from the Federal penitentiary in Illinois. In part, “I received your letter, photographs and the money order. Thank you! While I know you send the money with your heart, it would make me feel better if you went and had dinner instead. Your friendship, letters and the photographs are what’s important…The two of you are very special and real friends. As for Barbara wishing that there was a way to let the world know ‘the real John Gotti instead of the government’s propaganda.’ Many good people like yourselves know and that’s what’s important! As for making a visit to this hotel-Tell Barbara it’s a deal…I’m going to close for now as the heat and humidity makes writing almost unbearable.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Gotti’s hand and signed “Gotti #18261-053” in the return address area. A candid look at Gotti’s mindset and continued attempts to maintain his clean reputation.
