American poet (1816–1887) known for his re-telling of the Indian parable ‘The Blind Men and the Elephant.’ ALS signed “John G. Saxe,” one page, 4.75 x 7.5, August 2, 1858. Letter to Thomas Chamberlain, in part: “I left in my room…a pair of lightish colored pantaloons—stripe on the legs, and (I think) a hole…They are just worth saving, and when you, or any one of ‘the boys’ goes west to New York, let the trousers be…left at the ‘Stevens House,’…So I shall get ‘em.” In fine to very good condition, with intersecting folds (narrowly passing between and over letters of the signature), show-through from adhesive to reverse, a partial separation to right edge, and some light brushing to portions of the writing.
