Two TLSs, both signed "J. H. Glenn, Jr.," one page, 8.5 x 11, dated 1966–1967. The first, in part: "Thank you for your letter…asking for the name of my favorite book or books. I believe that we should all be exposed to a maximum variety of subjects to enable us to find not only the vocation that best suits our abilities, but to find ourselves. One of our greatest sources of individual growth comes from the books we read. Through books, we gain the wisdom of the past, which we can apply to our present work and, thus, develop plans for the future. Our growth as a nation depends on many widely diversified professions and skills. If our progress as a nation is to be as complete as we know it can be, then the wisdom of the past must come alive for us in as many fields as possible. For this reason, I prefer not to pinpoint any particular books as being more beneficial than others." The second, in full: "Thank you for your letter regarding inclusion of my previous letter in a reprint volume you are planning. That is certainly satisfactory with me and I am glad you have received such favorable comment on your activities." In overall fine condition. Accompanied by both original mailing envelopes. Byrne ran a program at New York City's Elizabeth Barrett Browning Junior High School where she asked major literary and artistic figures for recollections of what books inspired them; some responses were published in the 1971 book Attacks of Taste. Pre-certified Zarelli Space Authentication.
