Union officer (1827–1896) who fought at Second Bull Run, Gettysburg, and the Appomattox Campaign, where he blocked the Confederate retreat. Civil War–dated ALS signed “John Gibbon, Brig. Genl. Comdg. Div.,” one page, 8 x 9.75, Head Quarters, 2d Division, 2d Army Corps letterhead, May 24, 1863. Letter to Governor Horatio Seymour of New York, in full: "By the dismissal of Col. H. W. Hudson, 82d New York Vols….the Colonelcy of that Regt. becomes vacant. I earnestly recommend that the present Lt. Col., James Huston, be promoted to fill the vacancy, and that the present Major, T. W. Baird, be made Lt. Col. In accordance with custom Lt. Col. Huston recommends Capt. George Ryerson Co. G. as Major, and I cordially endorse it. I trust these promotions may be made as soon as possible as the appointments have to be received before the officers can be mustered into service or draw pay." In fine condition.
