Union general and politician (1819–1873) whose geographically diverse posts included governor of the Kansas Territory, mayor of San Francisco, and governor of Pennsylvania. Partly-printed DS, signed “Jno. W. Geary,” one page, 14.5 x 8.75, January 1, 1872. Official certificate issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in full: "This is to Certify that William Boyer has on file in the office of the auditor general a duly approved and registered claim for the sum of Two Hundred and Eleven .60 Dollars as adjudicated under the act, entitled 'An Act to authorize the liquidation of damages sustained by citizens of Pennsylvania during the late rebellion,' and payable only when said claims shall be paid by the United States government." Signed at the conclusion by Governor Geary, and countersigned by Auditor General John F. Hartranft, and State Treasurer Robert W. Mackey. Impressively mounted, double-matted, and framed with two nameplates to an overall size of 23.5 x 22. In fine condition, with some light creasing. John F. Hartranft—who had been awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the First Battle of Bull Run and read the death warrant of the Lincoln conspirators—would succeed Geary as governor of Pennsylvania.
