Born in Massachusetts, John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) was a Quaker poet and outspoken abolitionist who, in 1838, nearly was killed by an angry mob who set fire to his antislavery center in Philadelphia. <I>Works</B></I>, Volumes I-VII, include Whittier’s poetry, songs, tales, sketches and essays on political and social issues. <I>Life and Letters</B></I>, Volumes I-II, were written and compiled by Samuel T. Pickard.
