<B>John Greenleaf Whittier: </B></I><B><I>The Works of John Greenleaf Whittier</B></I></B></I><B> and </B></I><B><I>Life and Letters of John Greenleaf Whittier</B></I></B></I> (New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1892-94), limited Artists Edition, number 300 of 750, in nine volumes, gilt top edges, other edges untrimmed, vellum endpapers, illustrated, brown-leather and vellum bindings with gold lettering and decorations, 8vo (6” x 8.75”). Born in Massachusetts, John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) was a Quaker poet and outspoken abolitionist who, in 1838, nearly was killed by an angry mob who set fire to his antislavery center in Philadelphia. <I>Works</B></I>, Volumes I-VII, include Whittier’s poetry, songs, tales, sketches and essays on political and social issues. <I>Life and Letters</B></I>, Volumes I-II, were written and compiled by Samuel T. Pickard.
