Career military officer and expert in underwater demolition (1823–1874) best known for his distinguished service as a Union general in North and South Carolina. Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Foster by Brady’s National Photographic Portrait Galleries, signed on the reverse in black ink, “J. G. Foster, M. G. Comd’g”; and a Civil War–dated ALS signed “J. G. Foster, Maj. Gen. Comd’g,” one page, lightly-lined, 4.75 x 7.75, Headquarters, Department of the South letterhead, June 6, 1864. Letter to Major Etting of Baltimore. In part: “I enclose my pay accounts for May, signed…deducting the $300 that I received from you in Balt, leaves $164.87, for which I would like a check.” Professionally inlaid into a slightly larger sheet. In overall fine condition.
