Prohibition-era gangster and con artist (1892–1984) affiliated with the Chicago Outfit who later became a prominent businessman and Las Vegas casino proprietor. ALS signed “John Factor,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Congress Hotel and Annex letterhead, February 4, 1935. The Chicago gangster contacts the Hollywood branch of Bank of America. In full: “I hereby authorize you to admit Mr. Davis Factor to our safety deposit box. Thank you very kindly.” Factor crossed out his original word “my” to replace it with “our.” Also signed by Factor’s wife. Wrinkling, small upper left corner crease, intersecting horizontal and vertical folds, and bank stampings and notations, otherwise fine condition. None of the defects affect Jake the Barber’s bold signature. Accompanied by a Bank of America envelope with Factor’s typed name. Factor was the half-brother of cosmetics founder Max Factor, who set up his business in Los Angeles in 1904. Davis Factor would be heavily involved in the business during the 1920, serving as general manager. A scarce item signed during the heyday of one of the most successful swindlers of all time.
