Engraved vignette featuring a well-done detailed image of the White House, with a horse and carriage waiting outside, 7 x 5, signed in the lower border in black ink, “John F. Kennedy,” and signed and inscribed in blue ballpoint, “To Mr. and Mrs. Don Hewitt, With best wishes, Jacqueline Kennedy.” Beautifully matted and framed with a never-seen original Jacques Lowe photo of the Kennedys dining, most likely in their pre-presidency Georgetown apartment, to an overall size of 15.25 x 24. In fine condition, with toning along extreme edges from previous display, not detracting from the bold quality of both signatures. Affixed to the reverse of the frame is the original mat in which the Hewitts kept this card.
Hewitt was the creator of 60 Minutes for CBS television, and his connection to Kennedy dated to the 1960 presidential election. On September 26, 1960, presidential candidates Kennedy and Richard Nixon participated in what was the first-ever televised debate between two political opponents for the high office. CBS produced the debate—under the direction of Hewitt—and that first of four such events is now considered a turning point in the campaign. JFK’s poise and charisma wooed television, helping win him the race. As the Kennedys were only in the White House from the 1961 inauguration to JFK’s tragic assassination in 1963, a narrow window exists during which this gift could have been bestowed.
