In full: “This will acknowledge with thanks your recent communication concerning the Springfield Armory. You will be interested to know that I have sent the following wire to the Secretary of Defense:
‘I want to vigorously protest the cut in employment at the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts confirmed today by the Department of Army. The great reservoir of skills in the Springfield Armory as evidenced by the superlative achievement of that installation during periods of national emergency should obviously not be dissipated to the detriment of our national defense potential. Further, the critical unemployment situation throughout the Massachusetts area will be added to by such action. I urge you to direct the Secretary of the Army to reconsider and re-evaluate his Department’s plans so that the Springfield Armory can continue to be maintained at its recent work load level.’
“I have also sent a strong protest to the Secretary of the Army against any such action. You may be sure that I will continue to exert every effort to have the workload maintained at the Armory in order to avoid any further reduction in force.” In fine condition, with small area of soiling to left side.
