TLS, as president, one page, 6.75 x 9, White House letterhead, August 22, 1963. Short letter of gratitude to John W. Snyder. In full: “You were kind to think of us at this very difficult time. Your message was a comfort to me and my family and we are very grateful to you.” In fine, clean condition. Accompanied by the original White House mailing envelope.

Still deeply grieving—some say even moreso than his wife—JFK took time to send this note less than two weeks after the death of his son, Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, who was born born five-and-a-half weeks prematurely and survived only two days. Many people, including Snyder, who had served as secretary of the treasury under Harry S. Truman, expressed their condolences. Overcome with such grief, following the loss of their child, John and Jacqueline Kennedy are said to have deeply reconnected in the following weeks, but fate was soon to intercede yet again. Eerily, exactly three months after dating this letter, the entire nation would share in the grief of the Kennedy family when the president was assassinated in Dallas, yet another inexplicable twist in the fragility of life. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
