TLS signed “John Kennedy,” one page, 7.75 x 10.25, House of Representatives letterhead, March 21, 1950. Letter to John H. Artesani, a specialist aboard the USS Shenandoah, in full: “Further reference is made to your desire to secure an assignment to shore duty with the United States Navy. I am enclosing, herewith, a copy of the letter I have just received from Captain W. O. Burch, Head of the Enlisted Detailing Section of the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Department of the Navy, Washington 25, D.C., which speaks for itself. I have contacted the Commander, Service Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, in your behalf, and shall keep you posted as to the results of my efforts in that direction.” In very good condition, with overall creases and scattered stains. Like Kennedy, Artesani was a Boston native enlisted in the US Navy during World War II. He was serving aboard the USS O’Bannon near the Solomon Islands at the same time Kennedy was commanding PT-109 in the area. Kennedy’s heroism in rescuing his crew after PT-109 was rammed by a Japanese ship earned him nationwide recognition and later helped to propel his political career.
