ALS signed “John Kennedy,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 6.25 x 8, United States Senate letterhead, no date. Letter of introduction to American financier and diplomat Winthrop Aldrich. In full: “This will introduce Henry James who is working in London on an exchange program for a year. I would appreciate very much any assistance you may find it possible to give him.” In fine condition, with a central horizontal fold. Accompanied by the original United States Senate transmittal envelope, addressed by Kennedy to “Hon. Winthrop Aldrich, United States Ambassador.”

Winthrop Aldrich, the recipient of this letter, had been appointed ambassador to the United Kingdom by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953 and served until 1957. Henry James was a Kennedy friend who, as the future president notes here, was “working in London on an exchange program for a year.” All three men shared a fondness for Great Britain, it would appear, with Aldrich not only serving as ambassador but also assisting rebuild Europe after World War II, and Kennedy having been a student of British history. Interestingly, JFK’s father, Joseph Kennedy, Sr., had been one of Aldrich’s predecessors as ambassador. A scarce and desirable example!
