TLS signed “John Kennedy,” one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, June 1, 1962. JFK writes Rose Marie Diller of Westport, Connecticut. In full: “The ‘Birthday Salute’ at Madison Square Garden on the 19th of May was an extraordinary event in many ways. The show was, indeed, one of the finest in terms of talent, but it was also one of the best organized and best produced. I hope that everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. There is no one so often forgotten as a committee member and, for events of this kind, there is no one so essential as a good committee member. I know that you played a great part in making it such a memorable evening, and I wanted to convey my personal thanks to you for making it so.” In very good condition, with a block of uniform toning over the body of text and signature from previous display, small rectangle of toning to left border, and small mounting remnants to reverse. Kennedy’s signature is quite bold.
President Kennedy’s description of his 45th birthday celebration as “extraordinary” fails to fully capture the event. What occurred that evening has become a legendary moment in American pop culture history, with politics and Hollywood colliding as the nation watched. Approximately 17,000 people filled Madison Square Garden to partake in the Democratic Party fundraiser and birthday gala, which featured Jack Benny, Maria Callas, Ella Fitzgerald, Jimmy Durante, Peggy Lee...and a musical rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ to President Kennedy by Marilyn Monroe. That breathy, sultry performance became one of her most memorable major public appearances—and tragically, her last. As the president himself said, “I hope that everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.” Fabulous content pertaining to that famous Kennedy-Monroe moment!
