Signed book: Profiles in Courage. Later printing. NY: Harper and Brothers, 1956. Hardcover with dustjacket, 6 x 8.5, 266 pages. Signed and inscribed in black ink on the first free end page, “To a distinguished public servant George Spencer—with my best regards, John F. Kennedy.” A gift inscription on the half-title page reads: “One of my bosses, Senator John F. Kennedy, autographed this book for my friend Senator George Spencer. From friend and admirer Senate Page John W. Briscoe, Washington, D.C. 3/22/57.” In fine condition, with some mild toning to signed page, light feathering to portions of signature and inscription, and some light handling wear. Dustjacket shows scattered light soiling and toning, flecks of surface loss along edges and spine, and a few small edge tears.

George Lloyd Spencer served in the US Senate representing Arkansas from 1941 to 1943, when the Democrat resigned to return to active duty in the US Naval Reserves during World War II. In addition to their political party affiliation, Kennedy and Spencer had both served in the navy, so it’s no surprise that a senatorial page—who knew both men—would have asked JFK to autograph this copy of his Pulitzer Prize-winning book.
