TLS as president, one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, October 2, 1962. Letter to Rear Admiral Willard J. Smith, the future Commandant of the US Coast Guard (the highest position attainable), appointed by Lyndon B. Johnson in June 1966. In part: “I have been thoroughly impressed with the Coast Guard officers and sailors with whom I have had contact while sailing aboard your yawl Manitou in the waters of Maine and Rhode Island. Manitou is a fine craft and your crew handles it with great skill. I was pleased to have the opportunity to sail with them.” Punch holes and partial stamp to top edge, a lightly trimmed top edge, and a few light creases, otherwise fine condition.
