John F. Kennedy, Signed Profiles in Courage.
John F. Kennedy. Signed Profiles in Courage. New York: Harper and Brothers [1956]. Early printing, published during the same year of the first edition. Inscribed and signed in full "To Harold French / with very best regards / John Kennedy" on the front endpaper. Octavo (8.25" x 5.5"). 266 pages, untrimmed.

Black-cloth spine and blue cloth on boards. Gold spine titles. Wear at head, foot, and along edges of spine, and on edges of covers. Minor toning in paper. The blue-ink inscription is still fine and dark. Overall very good. No dust jacket.

Profiles in Courage describes the activities of eight U.S. Senators-John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster, Thomas Hart Benton, Sam Houston, Edmund G. Ross, Lucius Lamar, George Norris, and Robert A. Taft-who were severely criticized for standing up for what they believed was right. Purportedly written by JFK while he was recovering from back surgery during 1954-55, the book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1957. Later, the actual authorship of the book was called into question, and Kennedy research assistant Theodore C. Sorenson was identified as the ghostwriter. Both JFK and Sorenson denied this accusation (made by columnist Drew Pearson), but a later biographical investigation offered strong evidence that the assistant did most of the writing while being supervised by Kennedy. This is a hard-to-find early copy featuring a fine JFK inscription.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
