Senator John F. Kennedy first visited Alaska on November 11, 1958, when he arrived in Ketchikan and addressed a crowd of 500 at the Coliseum Theater, advocating on behalf of the two seasoned Alaskan politicians who were seeking to become the state's first U.S. Senators in January of 1959: longtime territorial Governor Ernest Gruening (this book's author), and Alaskan delegate to Congress, E. L. 'Bob' Bartlett.
