Democratic mayor of Boston nicknamed 'Honey Fitz,' father of Rose Kennedy, and namesake of his grandson John F. Kennedy (1863–1950). TLS signed "John F. Fitzgerald," one page, 8.5 x 7.25, personal letterhead, November 19, 1917. Letter to Secretary of War Newton D. Baker. In full: "I beg to introduce Mr. Arthur Goldsmith of New York whom I have known favorably for a number of years. He was at Harvard while I was Mayor and I got to know him very intimately. He is a young man of fine character and splendid endowment and will do credit to the government in any position which he may be called upon to fill." In very good condition, with splitting along folds, and a few tears. Goldsmith was the friend and Harvard classmate of Fitzgerald's son-in-law, Joseph P. Kennedy. He went on to become a Wall Street stockbroker and maintained a close relationship with the Kennedy family.
