John Ewart Robertson (1820-1879), Portrait of Mrs Laurence *** standing three-quarter length, wearing a grey silk dress and holding a rose, within an extensive landscape, oil on canvas, 139.5 x 107.5 cm Paper label fragment verso, with quote from a commentary to an exhibition in which it featured, reads; ..though very severe in sentiment, is one of the best painted lady portraits in the exhibition. There is only one by Mr. Watts, superior not only to this, but to many others in the exhibition, but, after that, we are inclined to give this work the next position. Provanance: The picture is believed by the vendor, to be a portrait of her grandmother, and exhibited at the Scottish Royal Academy. Various pictures of ladies were shown at the annual exhibitions by the artist, including three entitled simply 'Portrait of a Lady' in 1840, 1842 and 1851, and a Portrait of Mrs P. M. Miller in 1854.
