Noted English painter and illustrator (1829–1896). ALS signed “J. E. Millais,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, Birnam Hall letterhead, September 1, 1887. Letter to an unidentified gentleman. In part: “My footman had just left and I am anxious to fill his place as soon as possible. A young man D. S. Holmes has shown me a good character from your Son, dated Feby 1886 which he says is a mistake for 1887. Can you recommend him and is this…the truth. I am sorry to trouble you but I have no other means of ascertaining anything about him.” On the second page, Millais adds “PS. I believe my wife has engaged him on trial.” In fine condition, with central horizontal and vertical mailing fold, and a few light creases and wrinkles.
