Manuscript DS, one page, 7.5 x 11.5, August 4, 1646. Naval document ordering ships to be prepared at Portsmouth for use off the coast of Ireland. Signed at the conclusion by John Evelyn ("J: Evelyn"), Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick ("Warwicke"), and others. In very good condition, with overall foxing and partial splits to fragile folds.

Evelyn (1620-1706) was a prolific English writer, gardener, and diarist celebrated for his contemporary coverage of art, culture and politics, including the execution of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell's rise and eventual natural death, the last Great Plague of London, and the Great Fire of London in 1666.

Warwick (1587-1658) was an English colonial administrator, admiral, and Puritan who commanded the Parliamentarian navy during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
