<B>John Evelyn <I>The History of the Three Late Famous Imposters, viz. Padre Ottomano, Mahomed Bei and Sabatai Sevi</B></I></B></I> (London: Henry Herringman, 1669), first edition, 126 pages, 16mo (4.25" x 6.5"), full leather, raised bands on spine, gilt spine decoration, very good condition. At the top of the title page (closely trimmed) is written "<I>Th. Newcomen...</B></I>", possibly showing original ownership. Newcomen was the inventor of the steam engine; he is often referred to as the father of the Industrial Revolution. Evelyn writes of Padre Ottomano, a pretended son of the Sultan of Turkey who later became a Dominican Friar; Mahomed Bei, alias Joannes Michael Cigala, who masqueraded as a Prince of the Ottoman family; and Sabatai Sevi, the pretended Messiah of the Jews.
