Included are plates of nine hundred and eighteen original watercolors by Herbert Knotel. Volumes 3 & 4 have more than five hundred plates, each with an authoritative caption by Colonel John Elting. Based on meticulous research into eyewitness accounts and official regulations Knotel's plates cover the uniforms of the infantry, cavalry, artillery and special troops of, among others, Britain, Prussia, Russia, Austria, Spain, Portugal, the Ottoman Empire, Naples, Italy, Poland, Bavaria, Saxony, Westphalia, the lesser German states, Denmark and Sweden.
