Illustrated in color by Herbert Knotel. <BR><BR>Volumes 1 & 2 depict the entire Grande Armee in detail; officers, sergeants, color-bearers, bandsmen, drummers and trumpeters, privates, and surgeons. In addition, these volumes contain material on lesser-known formations such as the Army of Egypt (1798 -1801), the pre-Revolutionary French Army, and Napoleon's police and internal security organizations. Included are plates of nine hundred and eighteen original watercolors by Herbert Knotel. Volumes 3 & 4 have more than five hundred plates, each with an authoritative caption by Colonel John Elting. Based on meticulous research into eyewitness accounts and official regulations Knotel's plates cover the uniforms of the infantry, cavalry, artillery and special troops of, among others, Britain, Prussia, Russia, Austria, Spain, Portugal, the Ottoman Empire, Naples, Italy, Poland, Bavaria, Saxony, Westphalia, the lesser German states, Denmark and Sweden.
