ALS, two pages, 8.5 x 11, no date but postmarked March 24, 1946. Handwritten letter to Gene McNerney, about philosophical differences of opinion between the American Legion and the Communist Party, in part: "For God's sake now there's no virtue in holding any particular opinion. There's a sort of dull mania abroad for considering people virtuous if they hold certain opinions and unvirtuous if they hold others. I'm not very familiar with the columns of George Sukolski but I've occasionally found illuminating things in them and occasionally things I disagreed with. I object to your friend's classification of Mr. S. as much as I do of his classification of me. This is the state of mind that is causing liberal thought in this country to settle into a set of blind prejudices that are only useful to the Communists, who are, in my opinion, rigging up the neatest and most unbeatable machine for the exploitation of man by man that has ever been devised. The fact that the American Legion is wrong—and God knows it usually is—doesn't mean that the Commies are right." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
