John D. Rockefeller Lot
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Exceptional lot of 31 typed letters signed by super-capitalist John D. Rockefeller. Letters span from 1915 to 1931, all written to Dyson F. DeLap, an educator from the New York area who appeared to have developed a close friendship with Rockefeller over the years. The earliest letters are mostly thank you's for birthday and holiday wishes that DeLap sent to Rockefeller. Starting in 1918, however, Rockfeller offers DeLap a job as chief superintendent of his various properties, with the charge of incorporating the best practices of how any one property is managed to the others. Several letters relate to the details of this job. In one letter dated 11 May 1922, Rockefeller proposes the following bet with DeLap: ''...I will give you fifty cents for each day from that day till January 1, 1923, on which you do not drink any ice-water; with the understanding that you are to give me 25 cents for each day during that period that you do drink any ice-water.'' In another letter dated 31 December 1931, Rockefeller thanks DeLap for his ''very beautiful letter to the editor of our local paper with reference to the editorial which we recently sent you...'' Twelve letters measure 8'' x 10.5'' upon Rockefeller's official stationery, most bearing the name of one of his properties. Seventeen letters, also on official stationery, measure 5.75'' x 7.75''. Also included is one engraved note card signed by Rockefeller thanking him for a ''beautiful and most expressive poem'' and an official Rockefeller Christmas card. All letters are in very good condition or better and all are signed in full, ''John D. Rockefeller.''
