Partly-printed DS, signed “J. D. Rockefeller,” one page, 11.75 x 7.75, October 30, 1885. Stock certificate for 100 shares in the Standard Oil Trust issued to W. H. Tilford, signed in ink by Rockefeller as president and John Dustin Archbold as assistant secretary; also endorsed on the reverse by Wesley Tilford. The original receipt remains affixed at left edge. In fine condition.

John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937) was a business magnate and philanthropist whose Standard Oil empire made him the wealthiest man in the world. John Dustin Archbold (1848-1916) was one of the United States' earliest oil refiners; he became one of John D. Rockefeller's closest associates after his small company was bought out by Standard Oil, rising to vice president and effectively running the firm from 1896 until his death. Wesley Hunt Tilford (1850-1909) was a Standard Oil executive for over thirty years; his brother, Henry Morgan Tilford, founded Standard Oil of California (now known as Chevron) and is portrayed in the film There Will Be Blood.
