John Cullen Murphy - Prince Valiant Sunday Comic Strip Original Art, dated 6-17-84 (King Features Syndicate, 1984). John Cullen Murphy always wanted to be a baseball player, but when his neighbor, Norman Rockwell, asked him to model for a Saturday Evening Post cover, he gave up his dreams of the diamond and decided to become an illustrator instead. In 1970, he joined forces with Hal Foster to produce Prince Valiant, and illustrated the strip for 34 years. Murphy never tried to copy Foster's distinctive style. His preference for a harder pen line rather than a softer brush look helped give the strip a more angular feel than its original creator's version. This page, drawn by Murphy in 1984, is a rich pageant of jousting knights, lovely maidens, and Prince Val himself. The art measures 13" x 19" and even with some slight glue residue in the fifth frame, the work is in Very Good condition. The three tiers have been cut and placed together with tape at the back. A majestic page of art by John Cullen Murphy! From the collection of Gill Fox.
