Title is Cactus Flower. 9" by 12" unframed. 16 1/2" by 19 1/2" framed. Oil on Canvas. John Cox. Born 1941 San Antonio, Texas. Known for: Plein-air landscape, figurative, nudes. A painter of landscapes and figurative works, emphasizing light and shadows, John Cox strives to create mood and emotion on his canvases. For over thirty years, he has traveled extensively to personally experience the actual locations of his works Cox became fascinated with art at an early age through classic illustrations in books and magazines. Illustrators such as N.C.Wyeth, Norman Rockwell and most especially Tom Lovell, forged his interest in art. However, Cox did not seriously pursue art until he was in his mid thirties because he was in the U.S. Navy for four years and also traveled world wide. Returning to his home in Texas, he became involved until 1975 in the professional levels of auto racing as a driver of top fuel dragsters. However, rising costs of racing and a growing family had him thinking of a new career. Almost by accident a friend showed his drawings to a gallery owner, who convinced Cox to try his hand at art. He started as a part-time artist and as sales increased, became a full-time fine artist. He first used watercolors and then changed to oil and now paints primarily in oil en plein air and from sketches and photos.
