British physicist (1897–1967) who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for splitting the atomic nucleus with Ernest Walton, and was instrumental in the development of nuclear power. Two items: a TLS signed “J. D. Cockroft,” one page, 4.25 x 7, Atomic Energy Research Establishment letterhead, October 14, 1952. Letter to Mr. R. G. Fielder, in full: “Thank you for sending me a copy of the article in the Pasadena Star-News. I shall be glad to send you a copy of my Nobel Award address when I receive the reprints.” Also included is the aforementioned booklet for Cockroft’s 1951 Nobel Award address, entitled “Experiments on the Interaction of High Speed Nucleons with Atomic Nuclei,” 6.5 x 9.5, eighteen pages, signed on the inside cover in black ink, “With best wishes, J. D. Cockroft.” In overall fine condition, with light toning to the covers of the booklet.
