English rhymster (1816–1891) known as ‘Poet Close.’ Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo by an anonymous studio, signed in the lower border in black ink, “Faithfully yours, J. Close.” A label affixed to the reverse reads, “Portrait and autograph of J. Close, The Westmoreland Poet. Price one shilling.” In fine condition, with image lightly peeling from backing at lower left and a bit of mild toning.
