Confederate general. At Appomattox he was sent on a furious ride by Longstreet to catch General Lee before he could meet General Ulysses Grant to surrender. General Fitzhugh Lee had reported to Longstreet that he had found a way out, John Haskell delivered the message to Lee before he met Grant but Lee discounted the report and proceeded on to the surrender. At the formal surrender ceremony on April 12th, he led the Confederate artillery to the surrender site. Letter to Bowsley regarding a legal matter. ALS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Jno. C. Haskell, Attorney At Law letterhead, January 4, 1882. Letter to Bowsley regarding a legal matter. In part: “If Mr. Talmadge has not acted I will address a formal demand … through you and if he does not contact will drop the matter officially as I feel that his action … has been most discourteous.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and overall toning, heavier to edges.
