This is an original John C. H. Grabill (1849-1903) photograph of No. 393 The Old Man of the Park Wyoming boudoir / cabinet card circa 1887-1892. John C.H. Grabill was a noted American photographer, known for his historical photographs of South Dakota. He had a Studio in Deadwood, South Dakota as well as other locations. This image is in the Library of Congress collection, as are 188 other Grabill pieces. The front is marked, “No. 393. “The Old Man of the Park.” This natural statuary rock is located about 18 miles from Sundance and about 20 miles from “The Devil’s Tower,” in the oil fields of Wyoming. Discovered by Rev. Williams and wife. (Photo. And copyright by Grabill. ’87 & ’88,).” At the bottom in gold lettering “J.C.H. Grabill, Photographer. Deadwood, South Dakota.” The back is printed, “Colorado, Wyoming and Dakota Views. Including Cattle Scenes in Wyoming and Dakota, For Sale by J. C. H. Grabill, Deadwood, South Dakota. Border has beveled gilt gold edge. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. Measures 8” x 5”. Good condition.
